When the journal re-launched itself in June 1913 as The New Freewoman: An Individualist Review, West soon sought literary input from Ezra Pound. Pound came to the journal through a network of literary feminist friends, meeting West through writer Violet Hunt (and her husband Ford Madox Ford), who in turn had met him through the poet and novelist May Sinclair, who befriended him in 1909. Sinclair’s 1912 pamphlet publication ‘Feminism’ situates her clearly within the new, more radical wave of British feminists.

Hulme, opening it to ‘collective access’ (Scott 2004: 142–3). D. was travelling to London and by 1912 taking part in vigorous conversations about new poetry among a group that included Pound, Aldington and F. S. Flint (whose essay ‘Imagisme’, actually ghostwritten by Pound, appeared alongside the latter’s ‘A Few Don’ts by an Imagiste’ in the March 1913 issue of Poetry). The group explored T. E. Hulme’s ideas of the image and a more concrete modern poetry. ’. Having been in correspondence with Harriet Monroe since her enquiry into his interest in the journal that summer, he had sent her already a trio of his poems that would appear in the first October issue, and had begun attempts to recruit other poems for her from the likes of W.
